India Vs Australia ODI Series Hero Honda Cup 2009 - Ind Vs Aus
The first match of the India Vs Australia ODI Series was a nail biting thriller thanks to Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar. 9 runs needed of the last over and Harbhajan was bowled by the ICC's emerging cricketer of the year Peter Siddle, as Austalia went on to clinch the match.
Toss: Dhoni is running out of luck in the recent past, as it was evident from the toss. Australia won the toss and Ricky Ponting with no hesitation decided to bat first.
Australia Batting:It was a great start for India as Ashish Nehra striked in his first over, trapping Shane Watson for LBW. Then Ricky Ponting and Tim Paine steadied the ship. Their partnership of 97 ended when Dhoni caught Tim Paine of Ishant Sharma's bowling. Paine scored a good fifty. In came Cameron White. Ricky Ponting was going fluently when a surprise delivery from Ravindra Jadeja trapped him in front. Ponting was out for a well made 74.
Hussey Show: Then came Mr.Cricket Mike Hussey, who went on to enjoy the biggest six of the season. Hussey made 73 of 54 while White made 51. As wicket were tumbling at the end, Ishant Sharma made it clear that he was going to give only 1 run of the last over picking up a couple of wickets in the process. The scorecard was 292/8 of the 50 Overs. Ishant Sharma was the pick of the bowlers as he took 3 wickets for 50 in his 10 overs. Praveen Kumar went for a whopping 77 of his 10 overs failing to pick up a wicket as well.
India's Reply:
India's reply was scratchy with Sachin Tendulkar looking ordinary and Virender Sehwag who has returned to International Cricket after a while failed to make a big start. The two were departed for 14 and 13 respectively. With Yuvraj Singh's absence Virat Kohli was promoted to No 4, as Gautam Gambhir steadied the ship for India. But Virat Kohli was out again in a similar manner as in the Champions League. He scored 30 of 41 balls. Came in the Captain Cool Dhoni.
Power Play Debacle: As Gambhir and Dhoni were trying to build a partnership they were slow doing so. Hence they took the Batting Power Play on the 35th over. Mitchel Johnson trapped Gambhir in front on the first ball of the power play bringing in Suresh Raina. Mean while Raina and Dhoni were gone in the power play as Dhoni tried to go over mid on and Raina was disguised by the slower delivery. Ravindra Jadeja was not doing any more damage as India looked in deep trouble at 201/7 in the 40th over.
Harbhajan Singh All The Way: But Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar had other ideas. Sixes and Fours were galoring as Australian Bowling strength was exposed.
Last Laugh: Australia had the last laugh. It went down to the last over but Australia eventually won the match as Peter Siddle kept his nerve. India finally ended at 288/8 in 50 overs, falling short by 4 runs.
